Over 118 police personnel, including several senior officers, were injured and nearly 70 protesters were taken into custody on Monday after the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) “Sansad Chalo” march turned violent in the New Delhi area, police officials said.
In an official statement, Delhi Police shared these details and alleged that protesters showed “disruptive, hostile and violent behaviour” during the demonstration, attacking security personnel and causing damage to government vehicles and public property.
“During today’s protest by CJP in the New Delhi area, participants engaged in unruly, aggressive and violent actions. Despite repeated warnings and lawful instructions from the police, they refused to disperse and intentionally violated the prohibitory orders in place,” the statement said.
According to the police, protesters hurled stones and other objects at officers, tried to break through barricades, vandalised police and government vehicles, and damaged public property. The situation escalated into large-scale violence, posing a serious threat to public safety, law and order, and the security arrangements on the ground.
