Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that a Malaysian technology will be used to construct three key elevated road corridors in Pune district.
Gadkari, along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, laid the foundation stone for the three corridors on Saturday — Pune-Shirur, Hadapsar-Yavat, and Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur. These projects are expected to significantly reduce the city’s ongoing traffic congestion.
While addressing the event, Gadkari mentioned that Pune is among the top three to four most traffic-congested cities in India, and this heavy congestion is also contributing to rising pollution levels. He added that major highways connecting Pune to nearby cities — including Pune-Solapur, Pune-Kolhapur, Pune-Nashik, and Pune-Mumbai — are witnessing record traffic volumes, leaving very limited scope for further road expansion.
Talking about construction, Gadkari instructed officials to implement advanced technology for building elevated corridors. Until now, the Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines permitted a maximum span of only 30 metres.
